Motivation in the Workplace
Maslows Hierarchy of Needs:
This theory highlights the idea that people are motivated by needs that are not yet satisfied. On the triangle of needs as you see to the right, Maslow believes that the needs based on the lower portion of the triangle need to be met before anything else and they can then make their way to the top. Organizations need to ensure that employees are being rewarded in a way that allows them to meet their needs. Alderfer's ERG Theory: Alderfer took Maslow's theory and put his ideas into three simpler categories as listed below. He claims that any of these needs can be met any no particular order, instead of the bottom up theory that Maslow had come up with.
David McClelland states that a person's needs are developed over their lifetime based on their life experiences. He made three categories named achievement, power and affiliation.
